* * * *

Ellery knew something was wrong right away. Forest paled, and Ellery held his breath, listening in to the conversation.

“Heart attack?” he asked.

Ellery could hear the whisper of the man on the other side of the phone. “She’s okay. But I need you to come home, please.”

Ellery didn’t know what to do. He wanted to comfort Forest, but he’d been in his shoes once, and he knew that nothing he could do or say would help him feel better.

Ellery had lost his mom to illness, and even though years had passed, he still mourned her. He would never tell Forest that everything would be okay because neither of them could know it would be, but he snuggled closer, wrapping himself around his mate and hoping that his presence would help at least a bit.

“Of course I’ll come home,” Forest said. “It’ll take a bit, but I’ll be there soon as I can.”

“That’s all I’m asking for. And don’t rush. I don’t want you to get into an accident. The doctors are positive that she’ll be fine.”

It wasn’t enough. Ellery could see it in Forest’s expression. He was terrified for his mother, and Ellery understood that better than most people. He stayed right where he was even after Forest hung up, pressed against him, wishing there was more he could do.

Forest wrapped his arms around Ellery and held him close. He wasn’t crying, but he was still pale, and he looked like he wanted to bolt.

Ellery wiggled to get off Forest lap. “Find Gal. He has to know about this. Do you need me to do anything?” Ellery could pack Forest a bag or maybe some food for the trip. He didn’t know where Forest was headed, but he would do everything he could to make his mate feel better. Not good, because that wouldn’t happen until Forest saw his mother, but okay.

Forest blinked and looked at Ellery. “I want you to come with me.”

Ellery sucked in a breath. “Come with you? You mean to see your mother?”

Forest nodded and took one of Ellery’s hands. “Please. I can’t do this on my own.”

“Of course you can.” It didn’t sound like a good idea. Actually, it sounded like a pretty bad idea. Ellery knew Forest hadn’t told anyone but Gal that they were mates. That included his parents, and now would be the worst time to tell them about him.

“I need you there. I know we haven’t talked about this or anything, really, and if you don’t want me to, I won’t tell anyone we’re mates. But please. I can’t go there on my own.”

Ellery couldn’t say no. Forest was in need, and he needed him. That had never happened before. No one had never needed Ellery, and while Ellery felt a little lost as to what to do, he didn’t want to let Forest down. “I’ll come.” He wanted to give his mate everything he needed, even though he didn’t know what it was yet.

Forest’s shoulders slumped, and he looked relieved.
